For our Dutch readers: scroll verder naar beneden 🙂

This Friday, October 15th, the world will celebrate and honour “women and girls who live and work in rural areas“ during the United Nations International Day of Rural Women. Fuerteventura has been shedding light on this theme for many years, and will do so once again this year 2021.

Between the 15th and 19th centuries, the main source of work and income for the Canary Island Fuerteventura was agriculture. Although this has gradually changed since the 1960s with the development of tourism in the Canary Islands, women continued to work mainly in the agricultural and domestic sectors. Initially, their work was unprotected, regarded only as “help for the family“ and “defended by men“. Even though in reality these ‘defenders’ were often their exploiters. An invisible ‘wall’ that women had to break! Their poor position gradually changed in the 1980s, when Spain became a democracy. As rural workers, they were given more rights. Also on Fuerteventura.

For these women, and many more rural women in the world, we take a moment this Friday 15th of October to further strengthen their position in the countryside. To emphasize their role and importance in this environment.

Is there a specific woman you will be thinking of this October 15th? We are curious to know who she is, please let us know in the comments!

This project “Los Muros Invisibles“ is possible thanks to the Canarian Institute of Cultural Development and the Government of the Canary Islands.
