Did you know that since December 2019 a street in the town Corralejo bears the name of a woman who has been important on Fuerteventura for breaking invisible walls?

The former Crucero Baleares street is now María González Carballo, named after María González Carballo (?-2018), whose “solidarity and love for her island“ should be an example for everyone. Therefore, most votes in the competition set up by the mayor Pilar Gónzalez and local corporations were for María, it would characterize the town well if a street bears her name.

So why is she known, what invisible wall did she break? As a mother of five children and at the same time taking care of fishing and preparing food for the whole family, she became actively involved with her neighbours who were losing their houses due to corruption. In the town of Corralejo, speculators tried to confiscate many houses, especially in the old part of the city, the Casco Viejo de Corralejo. She was a representative of this battle for her fellow residents. For this she was known as a fearless women, and for her hospitality and solidarity. In 2017 she received the Gold Medal at the Price of the Canary Islands for her role in this process against corruption.

The change of the name of the street is part of the Historical Memory Law of La Oliva, to help remember important characters from the past of Fuerteventura, fór Fuerteventura.

Since 2009, the City Council has been removing controversial street names, replacing them with local heroes. Today, more and more streets are named after women. In that sense, María is breaking another invisible wall!

Als moeder van vijf kinderen en tegelijkertijd zorgen voor voldoende voedsel door middel van vissen, raakte ze actief betrokken bij haar buren die hun huis verloren door corruptie. In de stad Corralejo probeerden speculanten vele huizen toe te eigenen, vooral in het oude gedeelte van de stad, de Casco Viejo de Corralejo. María was een vertegenwoordiger van deze strijd voor haar medebewoners. Hierom stond ze bekend als een onverschrokken vrouw, en om haar gastvrijheid en solidariteit. In 2017 ontving ze de Gouden Medaille in de Prijs van de Canarische Eilanden voor haar rol in dit proces tegen corruptie.

De naamsverandering van de straat maakt deel uit van de Wet Historische Herinneringen van de gemeente La Oliva, om belangrijke personages uit het verleden van Fuerteventura te herinneren vóór Fuerteventura.

Sinds 2009 verwijdert de gemeenteraad omstreden straatnamen en vervangt ze door lokale helden. Tegenwoordig worden steeds meer straten naar vrouwen vernoemd. Zodoende brak María nog een onzichtbare muur!
