Sport as intangible heritage / Sport als immaterieel erfgoed

July 2021, the month of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan! (for Dutch scroll down!)

The Olympic Games are a type of intangible heritage for the entire world.
Did you know that the Canarian island Fuerteventura, together with the other Canary Islands, also has a sport which is listed as intangible heritage? The Bienes de Interés Cultural (Canarian organization for the 'Goods of Cultural Interest') has listed La Lucha Canaria (Canarian Wrestling) as intangible heritage in 2018.

The sport originates from the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Spanish islands. In an arena with sand, two wrestlers try to imbalance the opponent so that (s)he touches the sand with any bodypart other than the soles of their feet. The winner is the last one standing.

This year some new sports were added to the Olympics (for example surfing and skateboarding) Do you think Canarian wrestling, an ancient sport ánd listed as heritage, could be seen as an Olympic sport one day?

Juli 2021, de maand van de Olympische Spelen in Tokyo, Japan! De Olympische Spelen zijn een vorm van immaterieel erfgoed voor de hele wereld.
Wist je dat het Canarische eiland Fuerteventura, samen met de andere Canarische Eilanden, ook een sport heeft die gezien wordt als immaterieel erfgoed? De Bienes de Interés Cultural (Canarische organisatie voor de 'Goederen van Cultureel Belang') heeft La Lucha Canaria (Canarisch worstelen) in 2018 op de lijst van immaterieel erfgoed geplaatst.

De sport is afkomstig van de Guanches, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van de Spaanse eilanden. In een arena met zand proberen twee worstelaars de tegenstander uit balans te brengen zodat zij/hij het zand raakt met een ander lichaamsdeel dan hun voetzolen. De winnaar is de laatste die overeind blijft.

Dit jaar zijn er een aantal nieuwe sporten aan de Olympische Spelen toegevoegd (bijvoorbeeld surfen en skateboarden) Denk je dat Canarisch worstelen, een oude sport én genoteerd als erfgoed, ooit als een Olympische sport zou kunnen worden gezien?
