In our
investigation of female stories from the 19th and 20th centuries in
Fuerteventura for the
Los Muros Invisibles project, we found in the field of literary arts many stories, poems and songs are
about women, but none of the artists
are women. For example
Fernando Cabrera de la Nuez (1829-1859), a well-known poet from Fuerteventura, whose poems are almost only about love and women.
This raises the question:
where were the women? Did they not write? Or were their works simply not known or published?
This situation reminds us of a famous question asked by the
activist feminist artist group Guerrilla Girls in 1989:
“Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum? Less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female“. Founded in 1985, they anonymously continue to fight inequality in the world of politics, art, film, and pop culture by telling the facts.
To change the paradigm: not only women
in the stories but also
behind the stories as the writers.
In 2021 the
Instituto Canario de Igualdad (ICI, Canary Institute of Equality) is organizing many events to include women of all ages in fields such as politics and art. We hope to contribute our part with our project by investigating what
invisible walls may still exist.
Can you name an invisible wall that still exists?This project Los Muros Invisibles is possible thanks to the Canarian Institute of Cultural Development (ICDC) and the Government of the Canary Islands.Photo: ´Cultura´ inside the building Casa de los Coroneles, La Oliva, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands.
~~~
In ons onderzoek naar vrouwenverhalen uit de 19e en 20e eeuw op Fuerteventura voor het Los Muros Invisibles-project, valt het ons op dat binnen de literaire kunsten veel verhalen, gedichten en liederen gaan over vrouwen, maar geen van de schrijvers is een vrouw. Bijvoorbeeld Fernando Cabrera de la Nuez (1829-1859), een bekende dichter uit Fuerteventura, wiens gedichten bijna alleen over liefde en vrouwen gaan.
Dit roept de vraag op:
waar waren de vrouwen? Schreven zij niet? Of waren hun werken simpelweg niet bekend of gepubliceerd?
Het doet ons denken aan een beroemde vraag gesteld door de
activistische feministische kunstenaarsgroep Guerrilla Girls in 1989:
“Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum? Less than 5 % of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 85 % of the nudes are female“ (Moeten vrouwen naakt zijn om in het Met. Museum te komen? Minder dan 5% van de kunstenaars in de sectie Moderne Kunst is vrouw, maar 85% van de naakten is vrouw). Opgericht in 1985 blijven ze anoniem strijden tegen ongelijkheid in de wereld van politiek, kunst, film en popcultuur door de feiten te vertellen.
Om het paradigma te veranderen: niet alleen vrouwen
in de verhalen, maar ook
achter de verhalen als schrijfsters.
Anno 2021 organiseert het
Instituto Canario de Igualdad (ICI, Canarisch Instituut voor Gelijkheid) veel evenementen voor vrouwen van alle leeftijden om hen meer te betrekken in bijvoorbeeld de politiek en kunst. We hopen met ons project ook een steentje bij te kunnen dragen door te onderzoeken welke
onzichtbare muren er mogelijk nog bestaan.
Kun je een nog bestaande onzichtbare muur bedenken?Dit project Los Muros Invisibles is mogelijk dankzij het Canarische Instituut voor Culturele Ontwikkeling (ICDC) en de regering van de Canarische Eilanden.Foto: ´Cultura´ in het gebouw Casa de los Coroneles, La Oliva, Fuerteventura, Canarische Eilanden.
