Did you know that another street name recently changed to honour the work and character of another woman from Fuerteventura? Since December 2019, the Acorazado España street is known as the Antonia Morera Rodríguez street.

Antonia Morera Rodríguez (1922-2017), born in the north of Fuerteventura, lived in the town of Corralejo. As a girl she grew up to learn and help at home, on the land to take care of the cattle and at sea to fish. In the second half of the 20th century, Fuerteventura basically had no functioning health system. Antonia stood out as a remarkable and volunteer ”nurse” of the town. Also Corralejo did not have a health system, therefore it was important that people like Antonia wanted to help. Without being entitled to (she had no diploma in medicine), she helped as a nurse all her life. She learned the basics from Gerardo Bustos, the doctor from the town of Puerto de Cabras (Now Puerto de Rosario) and assisted all kinds of emergencies: such as extraction of tooth but also child birth. Antonia performed the task of nursing with love and care and that is why she was loved in her town. She was important, for the town relied on neighbours like Antonia to support the local health system. [dt_gap height=»10″ /]

In 2016 the town of La Oliva, Fuerteventura, honoured Antonia on the International Women’s Day, the 8th of March, to recognize her importance and beautiful character. [dt_gap height=»10″ /]

So why would a street be named after her? Because for many years she was the only ”true” nurse Corralejo had known. [dt_gap height=»10″ /]

Do you know a street named after a woman? Or a street whose name has recently been changed? [dt_gap height=»10″ /]
